Shackleton's Adventure of Endurance

Summarize your learning of today's viewing of The Endurance using the notes you gathered from Social Studies. As you write your 10 sentence + paragraph, keep in mind Sir Ernest Shackleton's character as well as The Big Question: What Qualities Make a Truly Great Leader?

  1. Who Was Sir Ernest Shackleton?

Born in 1874 in County Kildare,Ireland,Ernest Shackleton signed up with the British Merchant
Navy when he was 16 years old. Ten years
later, he joined the National Antarctic Expedition under British Captain Robert Falcon Scott. This became the first of four polar adventures Shackleton would undertake.

In his third venture to the Antarctic, Shackleton set out to gain Britain the honor of having first crossed the full continent.Twenty-seven men served as crew members of the British Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, sailing aboard the Endurance. While Shackleton and his
crew failed to make the first crossing, their expedition became a larger-than-life testament to heroism and human endurance. Did all 28 men survived almost two years in the barren, frigid Antarctic when their ship was caught in pack ice and eventually crushed?
Think about waht you viewed today in SS as you watched the Endurance and "Write About It."

I learned that the endurance of Shackleton was very hard. The first mayjor diffuclty was the ship sunk in the ice. When the ship went down everybody had to walk over the ice on foot. Ther took 3 life boats. They had to kill all the dogs and a cat because there was not enough food. There was not enouhg fur sleepingbags for everyone. The lower rankings got the fur! Everyonels got the wool. Then the ice started to melt, one man fell. Shackleton saved him! Living on ice was tough but nobody would give up.

At 5:00, the ship went down. The pressure and force of the pack-ice splintered the sides of the ship and eventually caused it to sink into the depths of the dark, freezing water. Because of this unfortunate disaster, the crew was forced to live on icebergs. They hunted for seal and penguin and used the ship's boiler and the animals' oil to make a stove. Shackleton told his men to not overhunt, probably because they would lose interest in working and just eat all day. Some of the dogs were shot because there wasn't enough food to go around for them.
They dragged their (100+ pound) lifeboats in snow up to their waists and set adrift to another iceberg. The dogs couldn't do this because they were too weak to pull such heavy supplies. The crew set up camp and went into their tents. While a man was in his sleeping bag a gigantic crack split the ice and the man fell into the water. Knowing that the man could only survive for a few minutes in such cold water, Sir Ernest Shackleton pulled him out of the water while the man was still in his sleeping bag.
From the part of the movie we watched today, I decided Shackleton is loyal, strong and helpful.

Sir Ernes Shackleton was a man you would never forget. He was a man filled with generosity, bravery, and so much more! Learning about Sir Ernes Shackleton today tought me a lot. It was very interesting to learn about such an honorable man. I learned about how the crew survived through the tragic Artic Ocean. He was a very brave man because one night once The Endurance shrunk the crew members had to sleep on the ice! Sir Ernes Shackleton actually pulled out a man in the crew because the ice cracked on them while they were sleeping! The film that the Davison's class watched today was a learning expireance. Like I said before Sir Ernes Shackleton was a brave and helpful, loyal man.

Sir Ernest Shackelton; a man of endurance, loyality and honesty. Shackelton stayed in his tent for 2 weeks. He was feeling sick and depressed and had to think a little. The ice ice had started to drift even more.
Soon Shackelton started a new daily routine; to hunt seal and penguin. They started running out of supplies. Ernest Shackelton made a decision not to over hunt because he did not want to run out of supplies. Now they could only could carry 28lbs. per load. They had to kill the dogs to survive and move on.
The ice had started to dicentegrate beneath their feet. One of the crew memebers fell in the water. Shackelton jumped in and saved him. The man Shackelton saved only said "The only thing I regret, is that my tobacco fell in the water. In coclusion this my report on "The Endurance."

At five pm the endourence got wrecked because of the ice squeezing it. this horrible insidit made the crew travel on foot. the crew members are only aloud to carry 20 pounds per person. chippy the cat and three puppies were shot. they hunted penguins and seals. chippy was not working well and now he doesint want to work. Shacklten is telling him to work because he says since the ship sunk your not a captin anymore. Shacktin did not like that so he told him if you dont work you dont get paid. So after that he did. They started to live on packice but the ice started to melt so he took the three life baots and started to sail. Whn he was sailing a man was in a sleeping bag and they hit a big peice of ice and when they did the boat cracked. A man fell in, so Shacklten pulled him in because he knew he could only last 3 minutes in the freezing water. After the movie we watched today i notised that Shakltent cares about his crew, and is loyal.

Today in Social Studies I learned that Sir Earnest Shackleton’s ship the Endurance was crushed by tons of pack ice crushing the sides of the boat and dismissed it to the mysterious depths below. Who knows what happened to it and it’s supplies? Luckily, Shackleton abandoned ship earlier and managed to forage things like film, food and other necessities. The crew was very resourceful at that time and used a boiler for a stove, and even used penguins and seals to make oil. Shackleton kept his crew going with same routine everyday to boost their morale and he said that his greatest enemy was not the ice, but morale going down. They had constant struggles and he even went to his tent and completely blocked himself from the other members to go and think for two weeks. For a while everything was going okay until Chippy McNish refused orders and threatened to cause a mutiny with a group of other rebels. Sir Earnest Shackleton was able to avoid that by giving them their wages. Shackleton also did not want them to over hunt in fear that they would get lazy and simply sit down. After months of constant moving, the group decided to shoot the dogs because they were using too much food and they could be eaten, but definitely not wasted. Finally the event that the crew dreaded happened. The ice was cracking and the group only had three lifeboats and 28 men. Huge glaciers of ice would slam together at remarkable speeds like two bulls butting heads. One day, while everyone was resting in a tent, the ice split straight in two and a poor crewmember fell into the frigid and looming darkness of the water. Shackleton, knowing that the man could not survive long, grabbed him with his sleeping bag still on and rescued him. The man was gracious but was sad that he couldn’t save his pack of tobacco. From this movie I learned that Sir Earnest Shackleton was an honest and generous man that definitely lived up to his motto, “By Endurance We Conquer”

Sir Ernist Shackleton sailed on adventures. His ship's name was the Endurance. During one adventure the Endurance got stuck in ice. They were stuck for 10 months. The crew tried to get rid of the ice.

Later the ship went down like it was sinking. A man was falling in water but Shackleton saved him. His crew was now living on ice for a while because the Endurance had sunken and they couldn't get to land. The crew and Shackleton had daily routines every day. In conclusion, Ernist Shackleton and his crew are stuck on ice.

  9. Gianna,
Sir Ernest Shackleton was a great leader, even in time of danger. When the Endurance sank Shakleton and his crew headed farther away from the sunken ship. After they found a camp ground Shackelton stayed in his tent for 2 weeks. They were forced to live on ice, and hoped to drift to land. Just like on the ship Shackelon made a routine. One night the ice split and one man fell in the freezing water! But, Shackelton pulled him out of the water ( wow his he strong ). Shackelton told his crew that he they would be off the ice before winter. Te crew and Shackelton started moving toward the Scotia sea. Fortunatly they were able to make a grill from parts of the ship ( that was lucky). They killed penguins and whales for food. One last thng is that since the dogs were getting really hungry they had to shoot some so they would have more food. In conclusio even though Shackelton and his crew have been through a lot, he still was a great captin.

Sir Earnest Shackleton was a great man although he was loyal man to give up his mission so his crew members could live. At 5:00 the Endurance (Shackleton"s ship) Got wrecked by the ragged ice and sunk. The dogs were starving to death and all of them had to get shot exept for five. Also a crew member was in his tent while the ice cracked beneath him and fell into then water. Shackleton jumped in and saved him. After the man said he was mad because he lost his tobbaco. Back then that was alot of money. Ernest Shackleton told Mgnish to do something and Mgnish said m, "I dont have to , your not my captain!" What Mgnish said almost started mutiny. Shacklton stayed in his tent for Two weeks trying to figure out what they were going to do. Shackelton decided to start walking and bring the life boats too. The life boats were really heavy that the dogs couldn"t even cary them. It was hard for walking because the ice would just keep rotating, rotating, and rotating in the Weddle Sea. These two men were really starving Shackleton gave them his food. When thet were on the Endurance they were stuck for TEN MONTHS! It was very dark and it was really hard for the men to survive. Yet again Shacleton was a brave man.

During the time of Sir Ernest Shackleton, he had a ship. The ship was called the Endurance. All of the crew members had a goal to be the first the cross the Weddle sea and Antarctica. When they were on their journey, they discovered that some on had all ready accomplished it. They tried to accomplish another goal, to be the first one to walk across it.
On their journey, they got stuck in the middle of an ice berg. To resolve this problem they had to sleep on the ice. They had to sleep on the ice because, the ship, the Endurance, sank. (Sir Ernest Shackleton said “5:00 it went down”) They also had sleeping bags, wool, and fur. Shackleton gave the lower-ranked passengers on the ship fur, and the most important members’ wool.
To be a good crew member you need a lot of good qualities. You need to have bravery. You need bravery because; a true leader has to be strong in days like those. (For all we no Sir Ernest Shackleton could have freaked out, and turned the Endurance around and never made history.) Together the crew members had to have teamwork to resolve the problems they had on the Endurance.

Sir Ernest Shackleton quotes " She went down at five pm". That meant that his ship The Endurance sunk and fell to ocean floor. This means that he and his crew members had to live on ice until they find safety! The reason his ship sunk was because it got stuck in pack ice and eventually got squezzed until it was no longer able to hold the presure. It was hard for them to do this but they had to kill four puppies and their cat to survive. They even saved a stove from the ship so that it can make them warmer. They used penguin and seal blubber to make the stove work. Shackleton didn't want his crew to over hunt because he thinks that his crew might get lazy and not do any work. They knew that the dogs were eating their food so they had to do what was best for them, they had to kill the dogs to. After that mostly everthing was going there way until one day the ice cracked into two pieces and one of the crew members fell in! Shackleton knew that he couldn't survive long in there so with his strong muscles pulled the man out of the frezzing water and saved his life. The only thing he regrets was losing his tabacco. Now the ice is starting to melt. They have three lifeboats for 28 people. Can they survive the Artic ocean, we will have to find out.

Sir Ernest Shackelton was a loyal and generous man for he didn't want to complete his dream, he now wanted to keep the men safe and bring them back home. Ernist Shackleton sailed the Endurance. During his expedition the Endurance got stuck in pack ice an ice that packs together. They were on a ice berg for almost ten months! The crew tried to get rid of the ice that was destroying the Endurance but it kept on coming and coming.

Later at 5:00, the ship went down. The pressure and force of all the pack-ice splintered the sides of the ship and eventually tore apart caused it to sink into the depths of the dark freezing ocean. Shackleton did not write anything about it. From this unfortunate event, the crew was forced to live the iceberg. They hunted for seal and penguin to eat and used the ships boiler for a stove. A couple days later the ice started to break apart and a crew member fell into water but Shackleton saved him just in time because after that rescue one ice burg crash into the very crack the crew member fell. The crew and Shackleton had daily routines every day and sadly had to kill the dog and Chippy the cat. One cold day one of the crew member what to make there life boat bigger but Shackelton said no and there was a big fight. There was mutiny to the crew member. In conclusion, Sir Ernist Shackleton and his crew of men are stuck on ice with nothing but just to survive.

Sir Earnest Shackleton's ship went down on a cold, dark night in the arctic. His crew used the remaining timber to make tepee like houses. Since him and his crew were so cold they added hunting for seals and penguin a daily routine. He used there blubber to start fires. Shackleton stayed in his tepee like house or cabin for 2 weeks feeling sick and depressed. Chippy Mcnesh started to rebel against orders. Then Shackleton said that if they made it back to port they would get there wages. So Mcnesh stopped the rebellion. One day, the ice broke and a man fell in! Shackleton dived in and saved him. The man was alright but he regretted it because he lost his tobacco. What while happen yo Shackleton next? We will have to watch on to find out.

  16. Five pm, a tragic event happened. Sir Earnest Shackleton and his crew saw their ship, The Endurance get crushed to nothing by pack ice and sunk beneath the freezing, unforgiving, water. The crew and Shackleton then were allowed to take 20 pounds worth of items on the new voyage on the ice. They then sent off on the shifting iceberg to try to travel to the other end where they would take the 3 remaining lifeboats and travel to a near island. Meanwhile, while on the iceberg, a carpenter named Chippy McNish, ignored Shackleton’s orders, cunning Shackleton started to pay some wages as they went along, and McNish started to listen again to commands. Wise Shackleton then commanded his crew to not hunt to many animals because if they did, the crew would become lazy and relaxed, and then they would not cooperate any more. There were two islands fairly close to where they were. However, there was another island a little farther away that was supposed to have supplies on it named Deception Island. Shackleton chose Deception Island. Then, the ice started to melt. An ice crack formed at night under a tent and a man fell into the water! Shackleton reached in and grabbed the man sleeping bag and all out of the water! After being asked if all right, the man answered yes, but he said his bloody tobacco was lost in the water, and that seemed to upset him. The last event that happened was quite tragic. Dogs that were brought along to pull items had to be shot because they would die on their own and the crew needed food badly. I found this event quite saddening, but in order to survive, it had to be done. Shackleton is in a tough situation, but knowing how cunning, brave, and considerate he is I am confident the he will succeed in getting home safe!

Sir Ernest Shakleton was a brave, compasionate, and truthful leader. Unfortunetly, Shakleton's ship fell to pieces and sank on Nov. 21. Shakleton and his crew carried on by the three safty boats and at night would sleep in tents. One morning something tragic had happened. The glacier they were traveling on had split right down the middle and one of his crew members had fallen into the ocean. Thankfully, Shakleton had pulled him out of his sleeping bag and up on to the glacier. He didn't care much about falling in because all he cared about was his tobacco floating down to the bottem of the sea. He and his crew had a daily routine. This routine was that every morning they would go hunting for penguins and seals to help them survive. They used the skin to help them with normal daily life things but when it came to dinner time all they had to eat were seals, penguins, and the tobacco to chew on.Shakleton had kept his promise of trying to return to safty. It was his crews job to follow his orders. If Shakleton and his crew don't make it home safe they made the best effort they could. Especially, living in the cold for over ten months. If they do return saftly, well, then Shakleton gave ALL of his effort to his crew members and they should be grateful for getting the job done!

  18. Ava,

Sir Ernest Shackleton was very loyal to his 28 other crew members on the Endurance. The Endurance was a ship that Ernest Shackleton and 28 other crew members were on for an expedition. They were so close to reaching there destination then it all happened, there was a huge pack of ice and there was no open water in sight. Of course they were stuck. Shackleton and his crew just waited and waited untill they had to dig. But the ice was just to hard to cut into. So they abandoned the Endurance and took what they could carry. The Endurance went down on Nov. 21 at 5:00. The crew and Shackleton had to sleep and live on the ice! They had to hunt for seal for there blubber and penguins for there skin. Later the crew made little boats for 28 men to go in with the remainings of the Endurance. And of they went and of course that day was the coldest of them all. After a while it was dark and they needed to find a big ice burg, which they did. The crew and Shackleton set up the tents and went to sleep. But, the ice cracked in the middle of one of the tents and a man fell in! Luckly Shackleton was able to pull him out, The man was fine. The 28 crew members are lucky to have a leader like Sir Ernest Shackleton!
