Time For Kids Reading Assignment and Blog for Today

Listen Up!

"Everyday activities like listening to an iPod, playing loud video games and going to the movies can put your hearing at risk. Loud noises can damage the inner ear. This type of hearing loss can't be healed. But it can be prevented. Find out how to protect yourself."

Read through ALL the directions below before you begin this assignment.

Read the Time for Kids article titled, "Can You Hear Me Now," as you
create a flyer (or mini-poster) to inform kids about how to prevent hearing loss.
  • You must follow 2 separate steps to access the article, and then the flyer template for this assignment;
  1. For article, go to: http://www.timeforkids.com/TFK/teachers/wr/article/0,27972,2045237,00.html (You can copy and past this address into the address bar.)
  2. Worksheet: Look at right side of page (yellow) and click on Teacher worksheets. Go to page 4 and print out that page only, "Listen Up!
To efficiently gather the facts you need to complete the flyer, print out both the article and the flyer template. Before you begin, read over the template, becoming familiar with what information you will need to gather to create a informative flyer. Next, carefully read the article, using a highlighter or light colored marker (yellow) to mark off all the important information. Lastly, reread the article, as you fill in the flyer with all the important points that you learned from reading the article. Remember; you want to create a flyer to inform kids at Washington School about hearing loss and how to prevent it. (If you prefer not to use the template, you may create your own 8 1/2" X 11 " flyer using construction or white, unlined paper.)

After you have done all this, you may want to blog and share some thoughts on this article and what you learned about hearing loss and preventing it as a kid.

After I read about hearing loss I learned a lot of things about hearing. A fact I learned was that just if you turn down you T.V. or you ipod is a way to prevent hearing loss. Most people don't know that listening to headphones at full volume puts your ears at risk. If your iPod is on the maximum volume it's too loud. If you listen to it at that level every day, it will cause hearing loss. Sometimes, staying safe and sound is as simple as turning it down.
I also learned that on average, 15% of all school-age children live with some hearing loss. Also the Harvard study found that teenage girls have more hearing problems than teenage boys.

Reading about hearing loss is a very important topic. As I researched this topic, I thought a lot about what I can do to prevent it. I learned that using earplugs can help minimize the effect of loud noises. One of the facts that I learned was that in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the sound of plastic horns(vuvuelas) overpowered the stadium and the refs had to wear earplugs because the noise lvel was too dangerous. Another fact that I learned about hearing is that just one sudden loud noise can hurt your inner ear. On the 4th of July I always go see the fireworks. I never thought deeply about my hearing as much as I did today. Next time I go to see the fireworks, I will have second thoughts about wearing earplugs.I
will also turn down my iPod instead of putting it on maximum volume. I thought this was an interesting topic and now I will be more self contious about my hearing.

Reading about hearing loss was pretty interesting. A fact I learned was that the inner ear is damaged by loud noises. Another fact I learned was Fifteen percent of children live with hear loss. People need to be aware of rock concerts because that can damage your hearing. Another noise that people need to be aware of is an ambulance siren because that can also be very loud. Some good tips to prevent hear loss is wear earplugs or earmuffs. Another tip is to set your electronical devise on low volume. One more tip is to close the wondow if your neighbor is using a loud leaf blower. That will pevent you from getting hear loss. A good catch phrase is "Never get to high on volume."

I can not imagine what it would be like if I could not hear. Sometimes I feel we take it for granted. Reading this article made aware of how I can reduce the chances of losing my hearing. From now on I will make sure I turn down my TV and i pod when listening to it. If I attend a concert or movie theater that is to loud I could use earplugs. Preventing hearing loss is easy to do. All you have to do is turn down the volume.

I can not imagine if anyone could not hear. Me reading this article makes me feel very sorry for those who cannot hear and someday I might want to cure this horrible thing. I now know to lower the volume on my iPod or TV. Also when I attend concerts and its going to be loud I always get earplugs. Preventing loss of hearing will be very easy. All you just have to do is lower it down.

  7. If I were never able to hear again, my life would change drastically. When I researched this topic, I found a lot of really surprising information. One really flabbergasting fact is that 15% of all school age children live with hearing loss. In a class of 26 that is almost 4 kids! Also, many relatively common sounds are considered dangerous when measured in decibels. Listening to an I-POD on high volume, a rock concert, and even heavy traffic is classified as being able to permanently harm the tiny hairs in your ears. When I researched this topic further, I found out that everyone 12.5 % of all kids (about 5.2 billion) have suffered permanent damage in hearing. Our ears can only handle about 60 decibels without any damage at all. We can prevent harming ourselves by wearing earplugs or earmuffs. By taking a simple precaution, we can defend against a lifetime of silence. As you can see, we can reduce hearing loss by just turning down the volume.

When I finished reading the article I was surprised. I didn't know anything about hair cells in are ear. I didn't even know anything about decibels. Next time when I'm watching tv I'll make sure it's at the lowest volume. I'll also try to avoid really loud music or sound. I couldn't imagine being deaf. I'm so glad they gave tips on how to avoid loud sound. I was a little taken back on how 15% of school age children live in hearing loss. I would loath being part of that percentage. In conclusion, that is what I learned about.

I sometimes play a lip reading game with my sisters. They would move their lips without vocalizing, and I would try to find out what they were saying. If I was deaf, life would forever be that game. However, I do not think the "game" would be so fun anymore. It frightens me to think about what it would be like if I were deaf. It also frightens me find out that so many things can make you deaf, also that so many people are deaf too. I will try my best to prevent becoming deaf, and to prevent other people from becoming deaf too.

My hearing is very important to me. I cant imagine what life would be like if I couldn't hear. I can't believe that 15% of school age children suffer from hearing loss. When I read that damage to your hearing comes from video games being to loud I think of my mother always telling me to turn it down. When I read that ipods can also cause damage from being to loud, I will think of this when I adjust the volume. Also, I always wear ear plugs on the Fourth of July as the noise bothers my ears. When I go hunting with my Dad, we always wear ear plugs and ear muffs to protect our ears from the gunfire. Sometimes when we go to the movies and it's to loud, I keep my hat on because it covers my ears. I will try to spread the word to my friends when I am with them and their volume is up to high. Hearing loss can be prevented if we think about it and try.

I could not imagine if I had hearing problems. I think hearing loss is very important! One of the helpful facts is that you can close the window or door to keep the sound of a snow blower, leaf blower, and many more away. Also you can put a carpet in near your door or put certains up. I think I may do this to pervent this happening to me. I would like to find out if anyone that is in world hunger has trouble hearing. I could have maybe found out anthor way to get hearing problems. I hope the hearing problem will be curred!!

Hearing is a very important sense. It plays a big part in your life. So, a way you could prevent loss of hearing is by turning the sound down when you are watching TV or listening to your ipod. You could also use ear plugs or walk away from it. After I read about loss of hearing I learned that up close exposure can cause hearing loss after nine seconds. If you are extremely careful of how loud the volume is than you can help yourself and family members prevent hearing loss. If the sound is too loud it could damage your inner ear and it would become hard for you to hear. If I were not able to hear very well, I do not know how I would feel about my life. It would be frightening if I could not hear. So, if you want to help prevent loss of hearing just follow these simple facts and you will not have to worry about losing your hearing.

Did you know listen to music can put your ear at risk? Loud noises can damage the inner ear. This type of hearing can't be healed. Some people don't know that when your listening to your ipod, if the volume is as high as it can go, it puts your ears at risk. Also if you listen to really high music everyday, it will cause hearing loss. These are some way to know if your ear is at risk. If your ears hurt, and if the person who is next to you has to scream so, you can understand them that is not good. Block, walk and turn. Block the noises from entering your ears. You can also walk, walk away from it. And you can also turn it down. You can use these steps to help you prevent it putting your ear at risk.

I learned many things about hearing loss. By listening to youre ipod to loud you can loose hearing. Instead use ear plugs. Don't lister to the tv to loud. If you start listing to it quiet from the begining youre ears will adjust to the low volume. There are many more things to provent hearing loss.
